Slate Tiles

Slate in tile form is a very versatile material. Slate tiles range in size from as small as a few inches up to a couple of feet. Slate, like ceramic tile, is available in many different geometric shapes that can be combined in traditional or artistic patterns to further expand the choice.
Just as slate as a countertop material offers many different colours, so do slate tiles. In addition, the texture and finish of the stone may be selected according to the usage.
Heavy textures are frequently chosen for their slip resistance or their rough appearance. These may be referred to as:
- “split face” or “chiseled” — an uneven, faceted surface;
- “saw-cut” — rough saw finish with saw marks visible;
- “flamed” — damp stone is spalled with an acetylene torch; and
- “sandblasted” — resulting in a pitted surface, where roughness depends upon sand grit used.
Smooth texture for slate tiles can be either matte or reflective. “Honed” slate floors are not shiny, so they do not show wear readily and as a consequence can be more economical to maintain. A polished slate will have a mirrorālike appearance. Typically polished slate is used for walls or surfaces that will not experience abrasive wear.
