NKBA 2025 Kitchen trends report

Cole’s Notes: Functionality, personal touch, lighting, and biophilic, natural touches are on trend for this year.

The National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) released its much anticipated 2025 Kitchen Trends report last month, and as a member of the local Ottawa chapter  Ottawa kitchen designer, it didn’t disappoint. The annual report is designed to provide the industry’s designers and specifiers with insights for the most popular design styles and features. The report’s methodology includes a qualitative online survey of the NKBA membership and extended community across North America, and includes a range of professions and service providers. Here’s a quick summary of the report and some highlights we thought were interesting to share.

As part of the growing trend towards personalized design, 71% of respondents said they prefer kitchens with bold colors that reflect personality, compared to just 29% who favor a more traditional white kitchen. Statement colors are expected to be featured in backsplashes, islands, cabinets, wallpapers, and wall paints, adding unique character to the space.

The report goes on to emphasize how unique and personal design is becoming increasingly important, with 92% of respondents agreeing that the kitchen reflects a homeowner’s personality and 85% stating that it has the strongest influence on the overall “personality” of the home. As the trend toward personalized design grows, 71% of respondents note that clients prefer colorful kitchens to express their individuality, and 75% of designers report that homeowners want a kitchen tailored to their unique style. Elements such as decorative hardware, statement lighting, and vibrant local artwork are popular ways to showcase personality in kitchen design.
